The National Health Service Corps (NHSC) loan repayment programs each come with their own set of eligibility requirements.

We offer loan repayment programs to individuals—NHSC Loan Repayment Program and NHSC Students to Service Loan Repayment Program—and one program, State Loan Repayment Program (SLRP) to states.

 

Coming Fall 2018

NHSC Substance Use Disorders (SUD) Workforce Loan Repayment Program (LRP) Application and Program Guidance (APG)

  • Clinicians who qualify for the NHSC SUD Workforce LRP:
    • Physicians;
    • Nurse practitioners;
    • Physician assistants who are eligible to administer Medically-Assisted Treatment (MAT);
    • Behavioral Health Professionals;
    • Substance use disorder counselors;
    • Registered nurses; and,
    • Pharmacists
  • Clinicians receiving NHSC SUD Workforce LRP awards will receive $75,000 in loan repayment in exchange for three years of service.

NHSC Loan Repayment Program (NHSC LRP)

We expect you to read and follow all guidelines outlined in the NHSC Loan Repayment Program Application and Program Guidance (PDF – 580 KB).

To be eligible for an NHSC LRP award, you must be:

  • A United States citizen (U.S. born or naturalized) or United States national;
  • A provider (or be eligible to participate as a provider) in the Medicare, Medicaid and the State Children’s Health Insurance Program, as appropriate;
  • Fully trained and licensed to practice in the NHSC-eligible primary care medical, dental or mental/behavioral health discipline and state in which you are applying to serve; and
  • A health professional in an eligible discipline with qualified student loan debt for education that led to your degree.

How do you apply to the NHSC Loan Repayment Program?

We guide you through the application and award process:

Students to Service Loan Repayment Program (S2S LRP)

We expect you to read and follow all guidelines outlined in the NHSC Students to Service LRP Application and Program Guidance (PDF – 488 KB).

To be eligible for an NHSC S2S LRP award, you must be:

  • A United States (U.S) citizen or U.S. national.
  • Pursuing a Doctor of Medicine (M.D.), Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.), Doctor of Dental Surgery (D.D.S.), or Doctor of Medicine in Dentistry (D.M.D.) degree in a state, the District of Columbia, or a U.S. territory at:
    • A school of allopathic medicine accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (sponsored by the American Medical Association and the Association of American Medical Colleges);
    • A school of osteopathic medicine accredited by the American Osteopathic Association Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation; or
    • A school of dentistry accredited by the American Dental Association Commission on Dental Accreditation.
  • Enrolled as a full-time student in the last year of medical or dental school with a graduation date before July 1 of the application year.
    • Any unrequired or unrelated courses to the qualifying degree program will not count towards the hours required for full-time status.
  • Eligible for federal employment.
    You should expect to serve your commitment as a salaried, non-federal employee of a public or private entity approved by the NHSC.
    However, there may be vacancies that require federal employment, including a security clearance.
